ICELAND 2019:

Guided Backcountry Touring

ITINERARY:

We teamed up with Northeast Mountaineering (NEM) to offer an epic guided Icelandic backcountry adventure!

Day 1:

The majority of the flights to Reykjavik are red eye flights arriving in Iceland around 5AM the next day (April 9). Please plan to arrive in Iceland very early on April 9th in order to make the 5 hour drive to Dalvik.

Important: Please do not fly WOW Airlines, they have lost our ski bags many years in a row.

Day 2:

The 5-hour drive North to Dalvik is truly beautiful and gives you a great introduction to the Icelandic scenery. Upon arrival, you will have time to nap and relax. You will meet your NEM guides around 3pm and go through an extensive gear check. Dinner will be enjoyed in the beautiful town of Dalvik.

*Itinerary is subject to change based on weather and snow conditions. We will maximize the experience by adjusting the itinerary to match the conditions.

*Day 3 - 8 SKIING:

For 6 days we will be ski touring throughout the Troll Peninsula. There are many different valleys that offer a wide range of ski conditions and slope angles. There is something for everyone here!

An emphasis will be put on fitting in big days and as much skiing as possible. You will become part of the team and the decision-making process. Not only will you ski a ton, but you will learn a lot of about group dynamics, safe travel practices in avalanche terrain and outdoor leadership.

Day 9:

After breakfast, we will begin the long drive back to the capital city of Reykjavik arriving in the city in the early afternoon. Evening flights (after 5PM) can be booked if you are on a time crunch and they are available. Most flights depart to the US around mid-day or early evening so we highly recommend departing the following day. Reykjavik is a wonderful city full of Icelandic culture.

Things to consider:

  1. All Participants MUST be skilled skiers or split-boarders.

  2. Participants must have prior backcountry experience and be comfortable skiing 45-degree terrain in variable conditions. Skiing in the backcountry has little resemblance of resort skiing.

  3. Although the most affordable, we highly recommend you do not fly WOW Airlines. They are notorious for losing baggage, delayed flights and charging fees for nearly everything. Iceland Air is the preferred airline. $500 -$650 flights are the norm.

  4. Iceland is expensive. Meals are often $20-$30/person. Please factor this into your budget. You will be able to cook at the house should you wish to save some money.

  5. There will be limited parking at the rental house. Once we have our roster finalized, we will send out emails of the participants so you can then coordinate rental cars and split the cost of the rental and gas.

  6. We will have WiFi at the rental house. If you would like to have WiFi in the field, we recommend the SkyRoam device.

  7. Backcountry ski gear is hard to come by in Iceland. We recommend you bring replacement parts as well as a small tool kit in order to fix common issues with your set-up. We do have a location we can get to rent skis or fix minor issues if the need arises

  8. As with all NEM international adventures, we highly recommend “Global Rescue” insurance as well as trip insurance.

GENERAL POLICIES

NEM's Adventure plans and itineraries are subject to change or adjustment based on a number of factors. These include, but are not limited to, route conditions, weather, terrain, and many other factors. NEM has complete discretion to change plans to accommodate any of these or other factors, including discretion to change program schedule or itinerary, and change guides or staff, as necessary for the proper and safe conduct of the program.

We reserve the right to cancel any program due to inadequate signups, weather or route conditions. In such a case, an NEM credit for the full value is given; however, NEM cannot be responsible for any additional expenses incurred in preparing for the program (i.e., airline tickets, equipment purchase or rental, hotel reservations).

NEM reserves the right to dismiss the Participant from a trip at any time if NEM determines, in its sole discretion, that the Participant is not physically, technically, or psychologically prepared for or capable of participating in the program. This includes being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

SUMMIT ATTEMPT

Northeast Mountaineering cannot guarantee that you will reach the summit. Weather, route conditions, your own abilities or the abilities of others may create circumstances that make an ascent unsafe, and you or your entire party will have to turn around without reaching the summit. Your program fee entitles you to one summit attempt on your specified dates.

MINIMUM REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS

For our adventures to run as booked, we must have 50% enrollment of the maximum participant allotment. As an example, if the program has a maximum of 8 people then we must have 4 registered participants for the adventure. In the case of low registration, you may be asked to postpone or join another group on a different date. Exceptions may be made but it is at complete discretion of Northeast Mountaineering, its guides and agents.

RISK MANAGEMENT - Saftey First

Safety is NEM’s number one priority. Our guides manage significant hazards inherent in the mountains such as avalanches, ice fall, rock fall, inclement weather, and high winds, but they cannot eliminate them. NEM guides draw from their wealth of experience and training to make sound decisions that maximize your experience without compromising the necessary margin of safety. Please clearly understand that mountaineering and all other mountain adventures are inherently hazardous sports. You are choosing to engage in an activity in which participants have been injured and killed. While those accidents are indeed infrequent, they may occur at any time and be out of our control. We ask that participants acknowledge the risk and hazards of these sports, and make their own choices about whether or not to engage in these activities.

PAYMENTS - INTERNATIONAL ADVENTURES

A non-refundable deposit of $200 per person secures your reservation but may vary - please check the individual pages. Payments may be made via MasterCard, Visa, American Express, or check. Final payment is due 1 month [30 days] before departure - but may vary. For your convenience, we can work out a monthly payment plan.

CANCELLATION POLICY

There will be no refunds for cancellations made less than 7 days before your program. Unfortunately, due to the time-sensitive nature of our business, and the difficulty in re-booking a trip close to departure, we cannot make exceptions to this policy. All refunds will be given in NEM credit.

CHANGE OF DATE

Date changes are subject to availability and apply only to the current climbing season. Date changes may be requested at anytime up to 7 days prior to your departure date for a $25 fee per person. Date changes may be requested at anytime up to 3 days prior to your departure date for a $50 fee per person. There are no date changes allowed less than 2 days before departure.
